Biocatalysts Ltd, a leading provider of enzyme solutions, and GOA Ventures, an innovator in the sustainable seaweed economy, are excited to announce a long-term strategic collaboration. This collaboration will accelerate sustainable protein and renewable energy solutions using seaweed, representing a significant advancement in eco-friendly valorisation of this emerging raw material.
Through this partnership, GOA Ventures will employ its proprietary process with two enzymatic steps to revolutionise seaweed’s potential in food and renewable energy. GOA’s process relies on the precise enzymatic hydrolysis of the seaweed cell wall, enabling efficient extraction of valuable components from fresh seaweed. With the global demand for sustainable protein sources and eco-friendly energy alternatives growing, Biocatalysts Ltd and GOA Ventures are poised to make an impact in reducing dependency on fossil-based raw materials, offering a future-proof solution for the protein market.
This collaboration will focus on leveraging Biocatalysts Ltd’s existing enzyme portfolio for the initial phase of the project, with long-term plans to co-develop novel enzyme solutions to optimize and expand value extraction. Research and development efforts will be led by the BRAIN Biotech R&D team based in Zwingenberg, Germany, to advance enzyme efficacy and create tailored solutions.
"Biocatalysts Ltd is thrilled to partner with GOA Ventures on a project that has such profound environmental and economic potential," - comments Pieter-Jan Heijkoop, VP Baking & Beverages of Biocatalysts Ltd.
“Seaweed is an incredibly fast-growing, renewable resource that doesn’t compete with traditional agricultural resources, and it has an impressively low carbon footprint. Together, we can make a real impact on sustainable protein supply chains and the global shift toward green industry
GOA Ventures has emerged as a trailblazer in the seaweed industry, transforming fresh seaweed into multiple high-value products including sustainable proteins, biopolymers for cosmetics, and clean energy, biogas. GOA’s proprietary cascaded biorefinery approach maximises the value of seaweed whilst reducing environmental impact, positioning it as a versatile alternative for industries seeking renewable resources.
"We are excited to partner with Biocatalysts Ltd in our mission to unlock the full potential of seaweed," said Theo Verleun, CEO of GOA Ventures
“Our combined expertise will enable us to overcome existing challenges in seaweed processing, making it not only viable but also a key player in the global protein and energy transitions. Together, we aim to build a greener economy and make a lasting positive impact on both the environment and coastal communities
